In Europe the traditional art of Paper cutting is called Sherenshnidt. My paper cuts begin with the traditional snowflake fold, and I cut them with ordinary scissors just as school children do to make winter decorations.
"Sun birds"

"Valentine"
These prints show 8 inch snowflakes cut from ordinary business size paper. Both pieces were folded twelve ways. The blueprint process is similar to a contact print in that it produces an image of the actual size of the subject. To make a bigger print I have to cut a bigger snowflake.

My 21" bandanas have designs that are cut from rolled newsprint. Some of these larger snowflakes took as much as six hours to cut. The paper snowflake can be printed onto the fabric any number of times if I'm careful not to tear it.

Cranes
Most of my snowflakes were cut with scissors making few, if any "inside" cuts. The Wrens and Fiddler 2 snowflakes are exceptions. These pieces were cut with exacto chisels and other home made punching tools in the style known in Mexico as "papel picado". The Fiddler snowflake was folded 12 ways to punch the guitars and just two ways to cut the fiddlers.

Each exposure prints only one side of the fabric, so bandanas must be printed twice, once on each side. These bandanas are printed on white cotton sateen.
